Magnifique!!

Women's Rugby World Cup Final 2014

England 21 - 9 Canada

England’s women are celebrating in Paris tonight after creating their own historical path and being crowned World Champions!

They beat Canada, 21 points to 9, thanks to a try in each half from Danielle Waterman and Emily Scarratt; with the rest of the points coming from Scarratt’s boot.

Make no mistake, this game was certainly no walkover and it was only Scarratt’s tearaway converted try in the 73rd minute that put an end to the Canadian resistance and wholehearted energetic threat.

England captain Katie McLean said afterwards;

“We have worked so hard for this. So many legends have gone before us who haven’t won it and it’s also about them today. It’s about the whole rugby family.”

“It’s amazing. Our families and friends have helped us and it’s absolutely amazing we’ve done it. These girls have worked so hard.”

It is amazing and it’s the first time in 20 years England has won the World Cup. They’ve lost to New Zealand in the past three finals.

Catherine Spencer was their captain in 2010. She said of this victory;

“I am so, so happy for the players. I know the pain they’ve gone through in previous years. I don’t think people understand the commitment these players put in, the hours of training and analysing games, the sacrifices made to get here.“

The Canadian captain Kelly Russell said good-naturedly after the game;

“I am so proud of the girls and the fans have been phenomenal.”

As the ecstatic English players mounted the podium to collect their medals and hold the Cup aloft, some were draped in the flag of St George, while hooker Emma Croker carried her daughter with her.

A familiar face was also watching from the stands - the coach of the England men’s team - Stuart Lancaster;

“What this England team have done for women’s rugby is going to have a huge impact,” he said.

At last ….

Allez les Blancs!
